The Institute of Applied Mathematics (IAM) designs and oversees interdisciplinary M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programs involving applied mathematics. The IAM also promotes interdisciplinary research involving applied mathematics. To this end, the Institute organizes seminars and colloquia, maintains a well-equipped computer lab, and provides consulting help to those who use applied mathematics in their research.

Admissions

To enter a degree program administered by the Institute, a student must first be admitted to an academic department and must clearly state his/her intention to follow an IAM program. The student's choice of department is usually determined by his/her interests and background, and by the availability of financial support. A potential supervisor does not necessarily have to be from the same department. Most IAM students are registered in the Mathematics Department, but IAM students have also registered in such departments as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geophysics, Mechanical Engineering, Oceanography, Physics, and Zoology.

Degree Requirements

Masters and doctoral programs supervised by the IAM have different requirements than the corresponding programs in the Department of Mathematics. Details of both the IAM's program requirements and the Mathematics Department's program requirements are available online.
