  • Nov 26, 2018: Tom Hutchcroft (supervised by Omer Angel and Asaf Nachmias), 2015 winner of our Graduate Research Award, and 2018 winner of a Governor General's Gold Medal. He will be picking up the 2018 Canadian Mathematical Society Doctoral Prize and presenting a prize lecture during the CMS Winter Meeting here in Vancouver, December 7-10, 2018. His lecture is Monday December 10, 13:30 - 14:30 in Pavillion Ballroom CD, at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Center.
  • May 31, 2018: Hong Zhe Chen, in Combined Honours Physics and Mathematics, has been awarded a Governor General's Silver Medal as head of the graduating class in Science. Details on our awards page.
  • May 14, 2018: Tom Hutchcroft has won the 2018 Canadian Mathematical Society Doctoral Prize! The Doctoral Prize recognizes outstanding performance by a doctoral student. Tom will receive his award and present a prize lecture during the CMS Winter Meeting here in Vancouver, December 7-10, 2018. Details on our awards page.
  • May 07, 2018: Tom Hutchcroft has been awarded a Governor General's Gold Medal. This recognizes Tom as the UBC doctoral graduate with the most outstanding academic record. Dr Hutchcroft made a strong impression during his time here, with a paper in the Inventiones in 2016, two productive summers as an intern at Microsoft Research, and the Math Department's Graduate Research Prize in 2015.   • Jun 10, 2014: The Math/Educational Resources (MER) wiki has been awarded a Flexible Learning Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (FL-TLEF). The MER wiki is a graduate student initiative that provides free online resources, hints and solutions to math problems for undergraduates at UBC. FL-TLEF grants are awarded to projects that "enrich student learning through innovative educational enhancements" and "propose an innovative implementation or piloting of digital technology". The MER team uses this grant to study the effectiveness of the wiki with respect to student learning and understanding of mathematical concepts.

    Professor Graham (UCSD) is a world renowned leader in the development of discrete mathematics and has served as Chief Scientist of Bell Laboratories and president of both the American Mathematical Society and the International Jugglers Association

  • Sep 28, 2010: The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Benjamin Young is the recipient of the 2010 Doctoral Prize (http://cms.math.ca/Prizes/info/dp/). The CMS Doctoral Prize recognizes outstanding performance by a doctoral student. Young received his Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of British Columbia, working under the joint supervision of Jim Bryan and Richard Kenyon.

  • July 2010: At this year's CAIMS meeting in St. John's, UBC was well represented as four of the main lectures, Early Career Award, Industrial Math Prize, Research Prize, and one of the plenaries, were given by Dan Coombs (Math), Brian Wetton (Math), Uri Ascher (UBC CS) and Michael Ward (Math), respectively. http://www.caims2010.ca

  • July 2010: In the recent IMO http://www.imo2010org.kz/?lang=eng&id_rubric=1 Robin Cheng, a member of our UBC Olympiad Circle (http://outreach.math.ubc.ca/) for the past three years, was Canada's highest placing student. Thanks to our excellent student leaders (graduate and undergraduate) and Andrew Adler for their dedicated and hard work in making the Circle a success. Many "graduates" from our Circle have been members of the Canadian IMO team.

  • May 2010: The Math Corporate Running Team, "Running Average" finished in 5th place in the Vancouver Sun Run, out of 34 teams in the Education category.

  • March 2010: The Department Teaching Awards were awarded to three postdoctoral fellows, Mark MacDonald, Jessica Conway and Robert Masson, and to one graduate student, David Kohler. These awards recognize outstanding teaching performances from our postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
  • March 2010: UBC Putnam results: Cedric Lin was the UBC high scorer on the 2009 Putnam exam for the fourth year in a row, earning an Honourable Mention by placing in the top 60 in the entire competition (out of a total of 4,036 participants). Other high scorers from UBC included Karlming Chen and Joel Fox, who placed in the top 200 participants. UBC's team placed 11th among the 439 universities and colleges having Putnam teams. Of the 22 students who participated, there was a whopping ten students placing in the top 10% of all competitors, with another seven in the top 25%. Congratulations to all the students who participated, and many thanks to Greg Martin for his dedicated work with the students in the practice sessions!

UBC President Stephen Toope notes, ``His generosity today will help transform basic and applied science education for decades to come.'' Prof. Cheriton heads the Distributed Systems Group at Stanford and is widely credited with helping establish the Internet search giant Google.

  • Jun 04, 2009: David Brydges and Zinovy Reichstein have both accepted invitations to speak at the next International Congress of Mathematicians in 2010 in Hyderabad, India. This is an extremely prestigious honour -- only a handful of mathematicians receive these invitation are invited. The ICM meets only once every four years. The ICM Satellite conference on Algebraic Geometry will also feature Kai Behrend and Patrick Brosnan as plenary speakers.
