The Seifert Fiber Space Conjecture

A Seifert Fiber Space (SFS) is a 3-dimensional manifold that is foliated by circles ("fibers"). A fiber generates a cyclic normal subgroup in the fundamental group of such a space. The SFS Conjecture is that any compact 3-manifold whose fundamental group contains a cyclic normal subgroup is a SFS. The conjecture has been proven for various cases. This talk gives a survey of these results.

Refreshments will be served in Math Annex Room 1115, 3:15 p.m.
